Paul L. "Doc" Dougherty
(Born February 18, 1929 - Died January 31, 2015)

Paul L. "Doc" Dougherty, 85 of Aston passed away suddenly at home on January 31, 2015. He was predeceased by his wife Alice Holefelder Dougherty. Born in Ridley Park, he was son of the late Francis Dougherty, Sr. and Marie Nolan Dougherty. He was predeceased by his brothers Francis, John, James and Gerald and his sister Anna Lazinsky. He was raised in Aston Mills and lived most of his life in Aston Township. He was educated at St. Francis de Sales School and was a lifetime member of St. Francis de Sales Church.

During Mr. Dougherty's adult life he worked for the Southern Penn Bus Company, Red Arrow Lines, and Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority for a total of 42 years. He was an Aston Township police officer for 15 years.

Mr. Dougherty was heavily involved within the community. He was a member of the Aston Township Zoning Hearing Board for 17 years, the Aston Township Planning Commission for three years and a member of the Delaware County Heritage Commission from 1997-2010. He co-founded the Aston Township Historical Society in 1993. Preserving the history of Aston Township became a big part of his life, and he enjoyed talking to people about the history.

Because of Mr. Dougherty's community involvement, he received many awards through the years. In 1968 he received an award from the PA Association for Safety Education for a safety program he began for young drivers and received Aston Township's Outstanding Citizen Award. In 1993 he received his second Aston Township Outstanding Citizen Award for his effort to restore the Village Green One Room Schoolhouse. In 2002 he was presented the Lee Brown Award from the Delaware County Historical Society. 2005's Aston Township Outstanding Citizen Award was presented to him and his wife, Alice. Mr. Dougherty is the only person in Aston Township to have received this award three times. In 2007 he received the Special Recognition Award from the Delaware County Historical Society and honors from the Aston Township Board of Commissioners. The Delaware County Heritage Commission presented him with an award in 2011, for his book "Growing Up in Aston Mills."

Survivors: his son Paul W. Dougherty (Gail) of Ridley Park, grandchildren Kimberly Knelly (Robert) and Mark Dougherty and two great-granddaughters.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 AM Saturday at St. Francis de Sales R.C. Church, 35 New Road, Aston

Visitation: 6 to 8 PM Friday and 8:45 to 9:45 AM Saturday at the White-Luttrell Funeral Home, 3551 Concord Rd., Aston, PA

Burial: will be in the adjoining church cemetery
